Test Preparation

It used to be that preparing for tests and exams was left entirely to learners. It was a matter of gathering notes and textbooks and getting on it with on one’s own. Teachers might provide old test papers or sample questions, but that was more or less it. Independent effort remains vital to test success but other things have changed. With futures hanging on SAT, ACT and GRE results in particular, test preparation help is the choice of many thousands of students.

The Trouble With Tests

Testing is a perennial controversial issue. The pressure that students, and especially younger learners, may experience when faced with a relentless schedule of examinations is one hot topic. Also much discussed is the extent to which testing really reflects a student’s knowledge and ability. Educators consistently point out that there is a difference between developing a proper understanding of a subject and being able to pass a test, which normally encompasses only a fraction of the material.

These concerns are clearly valid, but standardized tests such as the SAT, ACT and GRE are useful tools and are no doubt here to stay. They are a reality that no-one can afford to ignore and the evidence shows that good test preparation unquestionably helps boost scoring in any examination scenario.

The Basics of Test Preparation

A student may know their subject. That doesn’t mean they’ll do well on the test. Test preparation is a study skill that is not identical to subject comprehension. The most successful student is one who has test preparation skills and a proper understanding of the subject.

Of course, thorough acquaintance with the content of a subject is key to success. But when it comes to revision, there are ways of maximising efficiency. A student who has done the work along the way will have a ‘feel’ for the subject. That will allow him or her to prioritise study areas. Having some sense of what questions may feature is part of the battle. Old test papers and assignments will help students to identify the key areas that questions may address.

Prioritising is closely linked to time management as a key to successful test prep. There is always some limit on revision time and successful students know how to use it effectively. Any test is always partly a test of memory and there are ways of boosting that skill. Students can make lists or flash cards of key points. Answering old test questions helps identify gaps in knowledge.

There is a core set of basic independent study skills that all students need for test preparation. External help with SAT prep, ACT prep and GRE prep – or indeed any examination – is also well worth considering, especially with entrance exams where performance has significant life and career consequences. A well-planned test preparation schedule, and regular contact with a test prep helper, can keep learners on track and motivated. Online tutors can also help with the skills needed to perform in the test situation on the day.

With the growth of online tutoring services, almost any student needing help with test preparation can find affordable test prep help, accessible when he or she needs it and tailored and paced according to his or her needs, skills and learning style.

GRE Test preparation Strategy And Tips

Preparation Strategy for Verbal

First you will start work on vocabulary quarter in advance. In starting you can work on 10 word lists per day, from Barrons. Then read the word lists in the morning and revision the same in evening. Slowly slowly you catch the speed of reading the word lists and also increase the number of words per day. And, then revise the reading word lists on weekends. As you will fell, only studying and memorizing words, without revision, was not of much use, every weekend you should revise the already reading words.

You can’t get good score on the basis of vocabulary, If you have not started work on RC first. Then write down the 6-7 different kind of question from a passage, and study passages had these questions in brain. The Nova series book would have separatism of RC questions. Therefor, you should work on at least 2 RC’s (from Barrons, Nova and most importantly Big-Book),along with reading word lists.

You will be finished word lists in a month before your actual exam. Once done, then you start working on Antonyms, Analogies and Sentence Completion (from the exercise books). This was purposely done, because without having the words, running on these kind of questions will feel bootless. And, also start revision of 5 word lists in a day. And also reading Nova books for some extra words, in the mean time. But, this won’t be as difficult as the Barron’s.

You will found the Analogies is quite tricky in all the verbal questions. The Nova book has different coupling of words. it can be a negative part, so you should start work on this in detail, so that you could form the relationship of head-pair correctly.

Preparation Strategy for Quantitative

In the test, mostly questions can come from Geometry and probability for you. whereas In GRE test most of questions come from Geometry. Therefore remembering your basics of Geometry – Coordinate Geometry, Circles, Polygon properties, and so on.

Preparation for Analytical Writing

In the first 10 questions answering 5 wrong and the rest of all almost correct, will yet not give a good score. Praxis II-Smart tips for taking the tests

1. Put your answers in the right “bubbles.” It seems obvious, but if you are taking the paper-and-pencil version of a multiple-choice test, you should make sure you are “bubbling in” the answer to the right question on your answer sheet. Check the question number each time you fill in an answer. Use a Number 2 lead pencil, and be sure that each mark is heavy and dark and completely fills the answer space. If you change an answer, be sure the previous mark is erased completely. For the PPST computer-based version, be sure that the circle next to your chosen answer is dark after you have clicked on it. 2. Be prepared for questions that use the words LEAST, EXCEPT, or NOT. Some questions may ask you to select that choice that doesn’t fit or that contains information that is not true.
